The Burpee Museum of Natural History has fascinating exhibits geared for families and children, covering a range of scientific fields including geology, biology and anthropology. Some of the museum's featured displays include the skeleton of a young Tyrannosaurus Rex named Jane, a reproduced coal forest dating back to prehistoric times and recreated Native American lodgings and items. Hands-on entertainment for young children is provided in the Children's Gallery, where puzzles, books, costumes and special art projects are only some of the activities available. It is located in the River District of downtown Rockford in the Riverfront Museum Park, which also contains the Rockford Art Museum and Discovery Center.
